Solar Home Systems and Rural Electrification's Off-Grid Chapter

I've written before about rural electrification through grid expansion, but there's a parallel story that deserves its own post, the millions of households, particularly in remote char river islands and haor wetland areas the national grid was slowest to reach, that got their first access to electricity through small, individually financed solar home systems rather than a grid connection at all.

What made this program notable wasn't just the technology, small solar panels paired with batteries were hardly a Bangladesh-specific invention, it was the financing model built around it. Microfinance institutions, working alongside a state-backed infrastructure finance agency, developed installment payment plans that let households too poor to pay upfront for a solar system spread the cost over several years, making basic electricity access affordable to households that would otherwise have waited years longer for a grid connection to physically reach them. At its peak, this became one of the largest off-grid solar programs anywhere in the world by number of installed systems.

I think it's worth being honest that this program's role has shifted as national grid coverage has expanded to reach most of the country. Solar home systems were the right solution for households facing years of realistic waiting time before grid access, but as the grid has caught up in a lot of these areas, some solar systems have effectively been superseded, and battery disposal and system maintenance in areas the microfinance servicing network struggled to sustain long-term have become newer, less discussed problems.

Even with those caveats, I think this program deserves real credit as an example of financial innovation solving an infrastructure gap faster than physical grid construction alone could have managed, and it gave millions of households years of electricity access they'd otherwise have gone without.
