Meaning Without a Maker: What I Actually Believe Now

I've spent a lot of posts explaining the reasons I moved away from religious belief, evidence standards, the problem of evil, institutional failures, personal experience. I think it's worth closing this particular series by being just as direct about what I've built in that space instead, because I don't think the honest answer is emptiness, and I don't want to leave the impression that it is.

Meaning, for me, comes from fairly ordinary sources now: relationships with people I care about, work that feels worth doing, curiosity about how the world actually works, and a sense of responsibility to the people around me that doesn't need a cosmic enforcement mechanism to feel binding. I don't think I treat people well because I'm afraid of consequences in an afterlife, I think I try to treat people well because I can see, directly, how my actions affect them, and that feels like a sufficient reason on its own.

Secular humanism is probably the closest label for where I've landed, a commitment to reason, evidence, and human welfare as the basis for ethics, without needing to ground any of it in the supernatural. I find real intellectual and even something like spiritual satisfaction in things like the scale of the universe, the improbability of conscious life existing at all, the accumulated, hard-won knowledge that got us this far, without needing to attribute any of it to a designer.

I don't think this makes me morally superior to people who believe differently, plenty of religious people live more genuinely ethical lives than I do on any given day. I just think it's important to say clearly that walking away from religious belief wasn't a walk into nothing. For me, it was a walk toward a version of meaning I could actually stand behind without reservations.
