June 25th, 2022. I was glued to the TV like it was a World Cup final, and honestly, for this country, it kind of was. Watching that bridge open, knowing it was built entirely with our own money, gave me a kind of pride I wasn't expecting to feel that strongly.
People forget how this story actually started. The World Bank pulled its funding over corruption allegations that were never proven in any court, and plenty of people back then said Bangladesh simply couldn't do this alone. I remember the op-eds mocking the idea. Sheikh Hasina made the call to fund it domestically anyway, and years later here we are, driving across the Padma in twenty minutes instead of taking a ferry for half a day.
It's not just steel and concrete. For millions of people in the southern districts, this bridge means a hospital visit doesn't turn into a life-threatening delay. It means produce from Barisal reaches Dhaka markets fresh instead of half-rotten. My uncle in Shariatpur, who spent forty years of his life waiting on ferry queues, cried when he drove across it for the first time.
Say whatever you want about the current mood in the country. This bridge stands as proof of what got done when people committed to seeing something through instead of just talking about it.
